Has anyone weighed their kids and checked them against the BMI charts in todays paper. Apparently both my kids are in big trouble. My son who is 7 and has no waist appears to be morbidly obese and my 12 year old daughter who is 5ft 8in is off the scale. Both do regular sports and eat a reasonably healthy diet so to say I'm confused is putting it mildly

i think this is getting stupid. everyone can see what over weight kids look like and what they eat. Gill if your kids exercise and eat healthy then dont worry hun, my daughter is 5 next month but she is big for her age and i dont mean fat i mean tall, she is not over weight and she is proportion with the rest of her body and ok i have to buy her size yr 6 clothes, but that is down to her height, not her weight.

Kids go through so many physical and hormonal changes, you really should't worry yourself. I always ensured my kids get a good diet aswell, and the little tubby boy I had aged 10, is now 6'3 and looking like a rake, yet can eat humungus amounts. My picky daughter who doesn't eat enough is a chubby angel at 13! it's all down to metabolism and the individual. as long as your happy they're eating well, I wouldn't worry. Good luck.

Hate to say this but we are definitely all bigger now and that's why we don't recognise fat people as easily. There was a program on some time ago when one of the ladys on there was classed as overweight. She looked fine to me but her BMI was about 27 which made her overwieght. I know we don't want to hear that we are fat - we would much rather believe that the BMI is rubbish (which in atheletes cases it can be) but in most cases it is a very good indicator of fat. Not sure about children. My own daughter is large - not fat and wobbly but she is heavy although she eats sensibly. You only have to look at us as kids to see the difference nowadays and i think its because they don't walk, play out etc as much as we did.

Problem is... No one exercises no more. And the people that are overweight and start exercising just get laughed at for it. We need to accept the bigger people so their encouraged to lose weight, not abuse them and put them down.

I have never seen anyone laugh at a fat person other than kids. In fact my boyfriend had a BMI of 34 when i met him and i just described him as porky. I didn't even realise he was fat until we did his BMI one day!! Fat people are fat because they eat too much and don't exercise. Kids are fat generally i think because of their parents. If any of my children were fat (as in obese) i would not buy crisps or biscuits and i would only have healthy things in the house. It is hard to lose weight when you are so large but there are so many support groups and things out there now there is just no excuse. Smokers have it harder than fat people in my opinion.

I totally agree with " getrid of nasties" I know its hard to lose weight, I have a constant struggle to be slim, but I'm willing to stick at it. It feels good to be slim, look nice in your clothes and notice people looking at you in the street for all the best reasons. Then there are the health issues we all know of the added risk of heart attacks, strokes, high colesteral, blood pressure etc etc. but it seems people that are obese are not penalised like smokers, why is that? They must cost the NHS just as much.
